Restoration of Sight
Cataract is the leading cause of avoidable blindness in Nigeria. The operation is routine. The barrier is cost.
The problem
Almost all of it is treatable. A cataract operation takes under an hour and restores functional vision the same week. What stops it is a bill that a subsistence farmer in a rural Osun ward cannot meet, and a screening service that never reaches the ward in the first place.

What we do
Our response
- Run community eye-screening camps with local health workers to find cases that have never been diagnosed.
- Sponsor cataract surgery at partner facilities, covering theatre costs and the intraocular lens.
- Cover transport for the patient and one escort, which is often the deciding cost.
- Fund post-operative medication and the follow-up review that protects the outcome.
Who benefits
Specifically
Adults over 40 in Osun and Oyo States living with cataract-related sight loss, prioritised by need rather than by ability to travel. Older people living alone and widows are actively sought out during screening.
From the field
Restoration of Sight in practice
These are genuine Wemiji field visits, but none of them show eye screening or cataract care. We have not photographed this programme yet, and would rather say so than illustrate it with a stock image.
